The Cabinet of Ministers has finally approved the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill which seeks to replace the existing collegium system for appointments of judges to the Supreme Court and high courts.

The Cabinet gave its nod on August 22 after a meeting in the national capital.

The commission is expected to give the government more say in the appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and the 24 high courts.

Leaders at a recent all party meet had demanded that the government should bring in and pass a bill for the same in the monsoon session of Parliament, ending August 30.
